Not only has this year been a whirlwind, but we’ve had more time than ever to lust over beautiful kitchen designs. And we’re not mad about it.

We’ve found our favourite kitchen pictures from 2020 and unpack the trends that spur design forward. This year has seen natural tones and textures explode, curves aplenty, sleek handleless profiles and statement metallics and colour palettes.

Below, we look at the biggest new looks for kitchens in 2021, you can find more of our design inspiration and kitchen ideas on our social platforms and via our blog posts.

As we mentioned above, we’ve seen a burst in natural tones and textures coming forward in kitchen design. Natural materials are easy to incorporate and become impactful when designed into bespoke pieces. Natural materials such as timber, bamboo, stone, iron, rattan and sunlight are all beautiful ways to incorporate nature and natural textures into your space.

We’ve seen a resurgence of timber and woodgrains cropping up in design. Mixed with curves and sleek slimline cabinetry your bound to be onto a 2020 winner. The raw tones neutralise your space and add warmth and texture that can be worked into different kitchen styles with multiple features.

The kitchen above ensures the bespoke timber island is the hero of the room, with open shelving and soft curves to maximise space and make the area feel grander. Balanced by flecked concrete flooring, marble countertops and bright white cabinetry make the space feel dynamic and airy.

Curves

Staying ahead of the curve, 2020 is seeing that bespoke curved pieces are becoming a staple for contemporary design. The soft and organic shape of curved furniture creates a relaxed, feminine feel with an inviting touch. Curves allow elements that feature curves to become more oversized than usual and help maximise space and storage.

The kitchen above uses symmetrical curves to create balance, grandeur and add movement to the monochromatic design.  Heavily monochromatic, this predominantly grey kitchen has added warmth from the timber floorboards to the bronze tapware. While the space appears dramatic, soft elements such as curves, marble countertops and island and soft drapes.

So, circles, arches and ovals seem set to keep reappearing in future designs.

There’s no rulebook here.

This year we’ve seen contrasting tones and vibrant statement colours take centre stage. Rich, moody hues, elegant neutrals and vibrant jewel tones dominate colour palettes in 2020.

Alongside the natural materials we’ve seen this year, natural colour palettes have taken storm. With the likes of Sea-Green, Sage, Powder Blue, Olive and even the introduction of Terracotta’s being featured in new kitchen designs. This type of palette plays well with mid-century modern styling and combines vintage and antique pieces with contemporary design for the perfect homely feel. Also meant to soothe and calm, natural palettes reflect bringing the indoors in and suit many family homes with a flair of drama.

Neutral palettes have become popular in minimalist and contemporary designs with uncomplicated structures being at the forefront of their design. Neutral palettes are timeless and add a hint of understated beauty and clean living. Bold statement tapware like gold and brass pair beautifully with the neutral palette.

The kitchen above is by far not the most outlandish we’ve seen in terms of colour but features a beautiful statement Sage Green. The green is vibrant in this white coastal style kitchen, it creates a dynamic feel to this airy space and pairs well with the natural palette selected.

Handleless Profile

Sleek, slim and minimal. Functionality is a key focus in modern kitchen design. Many are deciding that it is not necessary to introduce handles to their cabinets. Handleless kitchen cabinets offer an effortless way to achieve minimalist design, and aid in making your cabinets the focus.

Handleless cabinets mean installing a push to open mechanisms, where the door will spring open when you place light pressure on the door. Alternatively, you can install Pull Handles that can be incorporated on the top or side of your door, which allows you to gain a grip of the cabinet to pull it open.

Handleless cabinets offer a timeless and elegant style, with a minimalist approach that is growing with momentum. Many appliances are now incorporating handleless designs into their options to enable you to streamline your kitchen and integrate a minimalist flow throughout your kitchen.

The kitchen above uses a dynamic olive cabinet colour which becomes a statement in itself. The clean profile of the cabinets draws the eye into the space and achieves a simple and effortless design.

Eye-catching and dramatic, elegant metallics are becoming statement features in 2020 kitchen designs. Paired with luxurious textures and materials such as marble, stone and natural countertops can add a classic twist a modern design.

Matt Black has become a powerhouse in the fixture world. You can get anything from sinks to appliances in the black-out finish, coupling matt black with metallics creates a contemporary feel. Fixtures are offered in a variety of finishes including matte, patinated, satin and high shine, you can achieve a bold statement with whatever finish you desire.

Australian kitchen design has transformed to a space that needs to feel personal and become expansive enough to host and entertain multiple guests. With a basis on functionality, kitchens are designed around their central hub, the island.

Islands allow family and friends to gather for breakfast, drinks and dinner no matter the time of day. Populated with an abundance of countertop space and often built-in appliances to double as an extra cooking space, islands are becoming multipurpose spaces. Families are now requiring more space, looking to double islands or oversized islands as an alternative to the classic peninsula.

The island above is the centre piece of the kitchen, a monochromatic design with bright white countertops create an airy and warm space. This island has an built-in sink for making washing up and prep work a breeze, while being able to communicate and entertain family and friends. The expansive countertop may double as a traditional dining table and workspace if needed.

Trends come and go, and we often turn back and reinvent style trends. With the global pandemic quickly changing the way we live and operate in our homes; design is following to support more people living and working from home. Not only are these trends beautiful now, but we think they will feature heavily throughout 2021 kitchen design.
