This functional refresher can make unpacking your dishwasher a breeze. Open shelving doesn’t require the tedious opening and closing for doors and can even reduce the noise pollution in your home.  Open shelving can be tailored to your lifestyle, whether you style the shelves with your favourite plants and accessories or you keep your daily products for ease of access, it’s up to you and how you want to transform your space. Our quick guide to replacing your cabinetry is below.

Open Shelf Guide:

  • Simply remove the doors and hardware off the cabinets you want to convert.

  • Remove the inner shelving and set aside, continue to clean out the cabinet and patch up holes until the cabinet is smooth.

  • Attach your desired trim with finishing nails and countersink them with a nail punch.

  • Caulk any seams with paintable caulk and leave to dry.

  • Paint your cabinetry in your desired finish and leave to dry.

  • Reinstall the shelves and fill cabinet with plates, bowls and décor.

Mix and Match Metals

The easiest way to rejuvenate your tired kitchen can be to swap out your handles. However, the choices can quickly get overwhelming. Knobs or Profiles? Antique Iron or Brass? Will you be able to see the holes from the old hardware? We deal with kitchens on the daily and find trends are ever changing.

Popular hardware choices right now are Matt Black, Provincial Style, Slimline Profiles and mixing and matching metallics. We recommend determining how you use your current handles or how each cabinet will be used. A combination of knobs and handles is always preferred, it adds interest and helps differentiate the use of each cabinet. We generally stick to the idea that knobs and handles are for the doors while using handles and pulls for the drawers is a functional option.

Once you’ve ironed out the above, you can narrow down your search. Keep the overall choices of your home consistent, from the pairing of metals to the type of handle.  Using too many differing metals and types may become confusing and an eye sore. We recommend only allowing for two different metals and three different styles in one room.

Paint with Purpose

A simple splash of paint can refresh any space, but what about inside the cabinet?

Painting the carcass can give your kitchen a whole new look, combine this with open shelving and you’ve completely changed your kitchen already. Painting the carcass also revitalise the cabinet and helps it appear new. Whether you go bold, like the photo above with a deep green or go simple and elegant with a crisp white, you’ll feel like you have a brand new kitchen in no time.

Upgrading your drawers can start with how they open. Installing runners makes your drawers easier to open and close and gives them extra strength so they can be completely extended, even when they’re full. We recommend checking out the wide range of runners that Titus Tekform has to offer. Here’s a quick guide on installing drawer runners.

Step 1:

  • Fully extend the drawer runner, release the plastic catch and remove the draw guide

  • Close the runner and hold it over the pre-drilled holes inside the cabinet

  • The front edge of the runner should sit slightly back from the front of the cabinet

  • Screw the runner into place

  • Now repeat for the other side of the cabinet

  • Slide runners in and out to test that they run freely

Step 2:

  • Line up the drawer guide with the bottom and front edges of the drawer

  • Screw the drawer into place

  • Do the same on the opposite side of the drawer

  • Slide the drawer guides into the drawer runners

  • Gently push the drawer pas the plastic catch in the runners

  • To finish, slide the drawer in and out to test that it works properly
